Rhodochrosite is a rare, manganese-carbonate gemstone that commonly has alternating light and dark bands of pink and brown. Rhodochrosite is formed by continuous precipitation of manganese carbonate, similar to cave formations with stalactites and stalagmites on the roof and floor of a cavern. This mineral is relatively soft, with a Moh's hardness between 3.5 and 4. This material is from Argentina, which is a world-class location for rhodochrosite deposits.

Our powdered material consists of mostly silt and clay sized particles. Our powders do have a slight grit to them. Please see the corresponding sediment size chart.

I'm working on developing all natural finishes for electric guitars that out perform petroleum based finishes... Especially ethically. One problem with most (otherwise natural) boiled linseed oil (aka flaxseed oil) is that they contain heavy metal driers of nefarious origins. I like to know where all my ingredients come from. One chemical commonly used as a dryer in wood finishing oils (to help them cure faster) is Manganese Carbonate (MnCO3). Another name for MnCO3 is Rhodochrosite. I'm super pleased that I found a source for this mineral that is all natural and traceable to it's origins. I'm ordering the crushed Howlite next for experiments using it as a white pigment. Thanks so much!
