Kunzite, also known as the pink/purple variety of spodumene, is a lithium-rich aluminum silicate mineral that was first discovered in 1902. Trace amounts of manganese give kunzite its color and prolonged exposure to UV light can cause the color to fade over time. Kunzite has perfect cleavage and forms in flattened prismatic crystals with vertical striations and can be highly pleochroic.
